Perspectives in Big Data Era: Emerging Opportunities, Key Challenges and Talents Cultivation

摘要：
With large volume of data in various domains being produced at explosive scale and the rapid cost-down of powerful computer machines, the time is ripe to brace the Big Data era. Analytics on such big data deliver amazing value and can drive nearly every aspect of our life, including commerce, finance, manufacturing, life sciences, etc. Decisions that previously were based on hypothetical models or just unreliable guesswork can now be made effectively and efficiently by utilizing the big data itself. New waves of revolution have jumped into this big data era with new opportunities and challenges arisen. Meanwhile, huge demands for talents in data science have also emerged. In this talk, I will first explore the potential opportunities of impactful innovations by utilizing big data in various domains including e-commerce, finance, biomedicine, social networks, etc. Then, I'll describe the main trends and key challenges in big data fields. In particular, some key challenging issues will be investigated in-depth through observations on practical applications in different domains. Finally, some experiences in cultivating data science talents will be shared with critical issues addressed.
