演講摘要:

In order to stay competitive in an industry or for a country, we all
know we need to be innovative in the markets we serve and create new
value for customers in this highly connected world. This speech is not
to offer a solution for all problems in how to be innovative in
general and AIDC (Automatic Identification and Data Capture) industry
in particular. I am here to share ideas with everyone and offer a
general suggestion.

AIDC industry was created in early 1970s when first barcoded products
in UPC was checked out from a store in Ohio. Barcode is truly an
innovation like Internet, which affects our life and makes our life
better since. It was a 1D and nowadays to 2D and possible to color 3D
barcodes in the future. The image processing and pattern recognition
technologies coupling with camera technology, just name three out of
the fields of the machine vision and computer vision, are the
catalysts for barcode scanning development.

Taiwan is at crossroad on what products and services we can offer to
stay meaningful and competitive in the world at today’s social
networking and big data society. We must think deeply in the areas of
innovations, markets, and customers’ new value. Not only we need be
the best to offer solutions to solve the problems we confront, but
also must we think broadly and focused on what direction of our
education should be. Ultimately, human capital is the most critical
asset to whatever we want to be.

The speech will end with a story with sense of humor talking about
Apple’s Jobs and Microsoft’s Gates and Windows.
