These biological composites, which have risen from hundreds of million years of evolution, are inspiring scientists and engineers in the design of novel materials. Their defining characteristics, self assembly, structural hierarchy, multi-functionality, and self-healing capability, will be presented with selected biological materials investigated in our group: abalone shells, crab exoskeletons, bird beaks/feathers, fish scales/teeth, deer antlers, and armadillo armor. Attachment devices used in nature, e.g. gecko foot, tree frog toe pads, and abalone foot, will be reviewed. The Materials Science and Engineering approach is applied by correlating the structure with mechanical properties at varying hierarchical length scales. Finally, several novel approaches to synthesize bio-inspired/bio-mimetic composites will be discussed. |
